There is tarnish on the antique brass which adds to the lovely timeworn feel and dents on the ball candleholder (which also twists) but this does not detract from the beauty of the piece

With just the lid with dials on the side which turn the numbers and months, and faded elegant bird detail, it is a wonderful piece which looks gorgeous laid flat on a table or can be placed on a little easel as I have done.
