Here we have a very nice officer's private purchase rifled flintlock pistol, all iron mounted with a lovely octagonal barrel. It is marked Oakes on the lock plate, a known maker of private purchase pistols during the Napoleonic era. Oakes and his associate Colley are listed as gunmakers at number 5, Oxford St., London, 1799 1802, and doubtless worked elsewhere in the surrounding time period. We have seen several
